In the autumn of 2020 Katerina Andreou met Voltnoi Berge, a man who has experienced the transformation of Athens’ (sub)urban music scene from 1989 onwards. This scene was then influenced by rave culture from the United States and England and driven by house and techno music. Too young to take part in the excitement of these spontaneous gatherings, Andreou immersed herself in the stories, books and music shared by Berge. At the same time she conducted her own research into this primarily sonic movement. Myths and rumours soon took over the reality of this underground scene, which, according to the choreographer, deserves to be approached with a more physical than mental approach. Filled with nostalgia for an era she did not live through, Andreou has created Rave to Lament: a fleeting, unique and impulsive movement that, rather than looking to the past, seeks to be part of the present.
Born in Athens and based in France Katerina Andreou graduated both from the Law School-University of Athens, and the State School of Dance in Athens. She attended the
program ESSAIS in CNDC d' Angers and holds a master degree of Paris 8 on research and choreography. As a dancer she collaborated among others with DD Dorvillier, Lenio Kaklea, Bryan Campbell, Dinis Machado, Emmanuelle Huynh, Ana Rita Teodoro.
In her own work, she is interested in developing states of presence sorting out from a constant negotiation between contrasted tasks, fictions and universes, often questioning the relation to ideas as authority and autonomy, communication and censorship. She often makes the music design of her own pieces.
She was awarded with the choreography price Prix Jardin d'Europe, in ImpulsTanz Festival in 2016 for the solo dance piece A kind of fierce. She then created the solo BSTRD (2018) and the duo Zeppelin Bend (2021) with Natali Mandila.
She is associated artist in CCN de Caen for the years 2022-2025 and in the Master Program EXERCE in CCN de Montpellier where she takes part in the design and developement of the pedagogical program.
