Re-creatures is back for the Mattatoio summer in June, July and August 2022, the season in which it first saw the light of day, inhabiting the spaces of the Pelanda and overflowing into the outdoor area.
A new movement of the artistic appearances of re-creatures, which renews the flow of installations and moments of performance art of the past few months and activates the spaces in synergy with the other training, research and production activities that take place at the Mattatoio, such as the Prender-si cura residencies, the formative pathways of the Master MAP_PA (Master’s Degree in Performance Arts run by the Palaexpo and the Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma) and free workshops.
The appearances and creations that are part of the programme from June to August plunge us into dreamlike, fantastic places. The artists return once again to dialogue with the space and with the animal creatures, this time tending toward an airy exterior and creating a state of porousness between the inside and the outside, at once architectural and symbolic.
The aerial component of the journey, of the potential height of thought, of migratory flight, appears here to draw our attention to the life of small animals, who show us just how much moving and crossing borders concerns us in our capacity as relational creatures who need experience.
The air is the channel for transmission that surrounds us and underscores our gravity, that makes it possible to transmit the voice and sound, the circulation of a common pathway, lightness, the ritual nature of chant.
The artists’ journey amid different places in the world takes place in a time that feels suspended and that can breathe life into creations that transcend the concept of linearity to unexpectedly draw out what places and “historic” interpretations contain and conceal at the same time.
The movement of bodies sheds light on the need and the ritualisation of being together, causing spatial, immersive and sensoral resonances to emerge in a collective and public dimension. The political and poetic discourse midway between anger and enchantment, in the moment of gathering, is freed of constrictions and codifications, opening up to the hybridisation of the different realiteis that flow together into the common space.
And finally, the gathering becomes a wake, a shared movement on the symbolic threshold separating day from night and conjuring up, beyond darkness and inaction, every possible and vital form of re-creation and of metamorphosis: places, species, personae.
re-creatures remains an invitation to publicly share a multifaceted network of proposals linked to the different languages of the performance arts, in the belief that artistic research and discursive and critical practices are the most effective tools for overcoming identity-related closure, for activating dialogue (including among different species), for avoiding conflict escalations, for exorcising the folly of mankind’s destructiveness.
