A conversation between artist Liryc Dela Cruz and writer Gina Apostol, featuring a video interjection by cultural mediator and representative Irma Tobias, and moderated by Kim Valerie Vilale. By tracing the mechanisms through which the individual subjectivities of the Filipino diaspora have been obscured by a variety of socio-political forces, this talk will discuss the strategies of defiance that are maintained within Filipino communities with the goal of reframing how Filipino migration is understood both in the Philippines and in their countries of arrival, from Singapore and Dubai, to Italy and the U.S.

Gina Apostol is a Filipino-born writer based in the United States. Apostol won the 2022 AAR Rome Prize in Literature. She is currently writing her next novel on womanhood and radicalism in fin-de-siécle Europe.

Liryc Dela Cruz is a Rome-based artist and filmmaker from Tupi, South Cotabato in Mindanao, Philippines. His works have been performed and exhibited in venues such as the Museo di Arte Contemporanea di Roma (MACRO), Teatro di Roma, and La Biennale di Venezia.

Irma Tobias was born in Laguna, Phillipines and has been based in Italy since 1981. Author of Manila-Rome and translator of Io Sono Filippino, Tobias is the co-founder and acting president of Kampi, the first association of Filipino migrant workers in Italy, and was the first Asian female councilor to the Rome City Council between 2004 and 2006.

Kim Valerie Vilale is an Italian-Filipina columnist and author. She hosts the documentary podcast Incoroniamoci, on Radio Bullets. She holds a degree in Publishing and Writing from the University of Rome "La Sapienza".
