“We are trying to perform in the present, but you are living also the past of your recognition and the future of your expectations, which are our constant companions. With us, in the room, are our histories and hope. With us are all of the people we have spoken with.”

From “Cheap Lecture” by Jonathan Burrows and Matteo Fargion

Being on stage means ceaselessly negotiating with issues of time and rhythm.

The time of a performance is multiple time in constant motion, which uses that motion to create opportunities for telling a story. Repetition. Loop. Rewind. Acceleration. Fast Forward. Pause. Freeze. Visual rhythm and the rhythm of sound. The time of mushrooms and the time of comets. How can we get these multiple opportunities for inhabiting the present time to dialogue with our own individual time, which is in constant motion between reminiscence and expectation, between memories and wishes? We would like to share a sequence of stories, ideas and paradoxes in an attempt to open up the opportunity of a collective journey through the space-time of the performance.

Muta Imago is a theatre company and an artistic research project established in Rome in 2006. It operates under the guiding hand of director Claudia Sorace and of playwright and sound designer Riccardo Fazi.

It comprises all the people who have been, are and will be involved in the production of its work. It is engaged in a tireless search for forms and stories capable of connecting the sphere of the imagination with the sphere of today’s human, political and social reality. To this end it produces shows and performances in which the space is that of the relationship and the clash between human beings and their time. The company is one of the resident artists at the Teatro di Roma for the three-year period 2022-22.
