Curated by Cristina Cusani and Dafne Salis
Stitching Memories seeks the presence of power structures in the lives of each one of us through the exploration of private memory.
With the aid of a team work and the exercise of self-awareness, participants will be able to explore if and how the patriarchate or other forms of power have acted in their past.
The project consists of two phases. The first phase consists of a workshop in which participants are urged to bring one of their family photographs representing an event they wish to change. In the course of the workshop, with the artists’ help, participants intervene on the image with embroidery, in an effort to metaphorically repair their memory. In a welcoming atmosphere, each one describes what she or he is doing.
Thanks to the similarities among the stories, the second phase in the project consists in a restitution of the information gathered. Personal narrative has the power to shed light on the systematic nature of events when it is built into a collective narrative.
Cristina Cusani (Naples 1984) and Dafne Salis (Rome 1984) are two visual artists who work primarily on photography. Their work has been shown at personal and collective exhibitions in galleries, festivals, museums and trade fairs in Italy and abroad, and has been a finalist in such important award schemes as the Strategia Fotografia 2024. Both artists belong to the collective of mother artists and activists known as The Glorious Mothers.
Together, they have devised a project for participatory art on the issues of memory and the patriarchate.
