The reptile house is a space where the life of small animals becomes the object of human attention. In that occasion, performer Sara Leghissa invites the audience both inside and outside the Rettilario, to shift their perception from one scale to another, from the macro to the microscopical, and back. In doing so, the nature of what we can see and hear slides into new territories, more abstract, less defined, colours, shapes, structures, textures, rhythmic patterns, that defamiliarize the way we apprehend our own surroundings and makes room for their artificiality. How to make a section of the city resonate, collecting and accumulating some of the materials that make it up? To explore those issues, the artist draws from the practice of foley, or the reproduction of everyday sound effects to dub films. Through an experience of overlapping between different soundscapes and the daily life of the city, a voice is given to the humanity that passes through it.

Rettilario by Sara Leghissa was supported and produced during Prender-si cura edition 2020 and 2021, a project of research residencies and artistic production realised in the spaces of La Pelanda.

Sara Leghissa is an independent artist and performer based in Milan. Her artistic practice takes place mainly in public space, through a principle of ecology of resources. She creates systems and devices that try to be mimetic with the context, to convey images and content by encountering different audiences. She co-founded the art project Strasse and has collaborated with various artists and collectives, including Teatro Valdoca, Dom-, Giorgia Ohanesian Nardin, Muta Imago, Jacopo Miliani, Daniela Bershan, Dorota Gawęda & Eglė Kulbokaitė. He has presented his work in Italian and international contexts and festivals, including Santarcangelo Festival (IT), Triennale Teatro Dell'Arte (IT), far Festival (CH), Festival Parallèle (FR), Saal Biennal (EE), Mir Festival (GR), Beursschouwburg and Kunstencentrum Vooruit (BE). Together with Annamaria Ajmone, she co-organises for the Italian scene Nobody's Indiscipline, an independent platform for the exchange of practices in the performing arts, and NESSUNO, a public gathering for a community of people who over the course of the night reclaim and celebrate the energy of bodies and their diversity.
