Invernomuto

Simone Bertuzzi (Piacenza, 1983) and Simone Trabucchi (Piacenza, 1982) have been working together as Invernomuto since 2003. Image in motion and sound are the duo's preferred vehicles for research; while sculpture, publishing and live practices are other variants that they use. Invernomuto explores subcultural worlds moving via different practices, in which the vernacular tongue is part of a pathway for drawing close to and embracing oral cultures and contemporary mythologies, observed with a gaze that is not averse to being contaminated by them. Within this process, a crucial role is played by the openly stated unauthenticity of the materials used, underscoring the phony, kitsch nature of the mystifications from which they take their inspiration. Both artists develop individual lines of research with the Palm Wine and STILL musical projects. The basic theme of the workshop is the relationship between image and movement, sound and sound design. The primary aim is to attempt to answer such questions as: how can one listen to this image? On what plane of the imagination does this sound intersect? How can the sound-image relationship activate alternative narrative tracks? Can images be silenced or, on the contrary, made to shout? The workshop pathway is open and analyses several historical and contemporary exemplars of the use of sound in the context of the cinema, of art and, on a broader level, of audio-visual material. Each participant is required to bring along a video clip no longer than 30", with no restrictions on format, from a personal or shared archive, thus it may have been filmed by the participant in person or borrowed from films, video clips or any other audio-visual material. A record (MP3, vinyl, CD or any other physical support) with its cover, with no restrictions on genre or historical period. During the most operational phase of the workshop these materials will be used as raw material for working with, and as sources for triggering a debate among the participants. The aim of the workshop is to provide a series of tools for finding one's way about in the multiform relationship between sound and image, a kind of undisciplined manual that can be applied to various different research pathways, contexts or exploratory obsessions.
